Hot 100 Chart Moves: Travis Scott's 'Watch,' Featuring Lil Uzi Vert & Kanye West, Debuts At No. 16

Travis Scott’s May single “Watch” featuring Lil Uzi Vert and Kanye West didn’t end up making the final tracklist for >ASTROWORLD, but the Pi'erre Bourne-produced song still played an important role in the album’s rollout. In fact, “Watch” contains one of the most direct references to the (now-defunct) AstroWorld theme park out of any song Travis put out this year. It begins with a sample of the voice of O'shaughnessy Hartley, an (at the time) seven-year-old girl who was interviewed by KHOU 11 news on the theme park’s final day of operation in 2005.

In a verified annotation on Genius, Hartley broke down the circumstances behind her fateful ride on The Texas Cyclone and her subsequent reaction when, years later, Travis Scott sampled her on “Watch”:

Six Flags AstroWorld operated from 1968 to 2005, when it closed and was subsequently demolished due to financial issues. In a 2017 interview with >British GQ, Travis explained that the album’s sound is inspired by the park’s closure.

“They tore down AstroWorld to build more apartment space. That’s what it’s going to sound like, like taking an amusement park away from kids. We want it back. We want the building back. That’s why I’m doing it. It took the fun out of the city,” he said. Although multiple mixed-use developments have been proposed for the site, it remains vacant over a decade after the park’s demolition.

“Watch” peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart back in May. It’s unclear why the song didn’t make the final cut for ASTROWORLD, but it remains tied with “Antidote” as the highest-charting song of his career as a lead artist.
