Winter Solstice Upon Anne Arundel But No Snow In Sight

With the winter solstice Thursday morning we dip into astrological winter, but the forecast is calling for anything but a White Christmas.

Above-average temperatures are expected to hold until Christmas Day, with temps of 60 or more on Saturday before a cold front moderates things beginning Monday.

“We are looking at a couple of cold surges with the bigger one not until Christmas Eve,” National Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Witt said.

Daytime temperatures will drop from a high of 60-plus Saturday to a high of about 37 on Tuesday, about 5 degrees below the normal high 46 for this time of December.

Christmas Day should be around normal at 46, the weather service forecast indicated.

There is also a chance of rain. From Friday night through the holiday Monday, each period has from a 30 to 50 percent chance of rain.

Long range forecasts for six to 14 days out call for below normal temperatures and above average precipitation for the period.

But that does not mean snow unless a slug of moisture comes up from the south to generate some wintry action.

“At this point, there is no confidence in anything developing,” Witt said.

>Will Baltimore get a white Christmas? Forecast suggests mild rain, but could trend colder

Baltimore has an outside chance of having a white Christmas, but any snow will require a quicker-than-expected intrusion of cold air.

A stretch of mild temperatures starting Tuesday is expected to last through the weekend and potentially into Christmas Day on Monday. But some kind of precipitation...

What winter will bring remains open to debate.

In August, the “Old Farmer’s Almanac” predicted five periods this winter that the Atlantic Coast could be hit with some significant precipitation.

The Almanac released a long-term winter weather outlook that “red flagged” the following dates in 2018: January 20-23, February 4-7, February 16-19, March 1-3 and March 20-23.

In October, the National Weather Services updated its winter outlook. Maryland was part of a band that NOAA's Climate Prediction Center said was more likely to be warmer than typical, but with only an even chance of being a wetter or drier than normal.

While many see the December solstice as the beginning of the cold winter season, others see it as the turning point toward the bright summer. From this day forward days get longer and longer until the summer solstice, the longest day of sunshine.

Thursday will have the shortest period of daylight of the year, with only nine hours, 24 minutes and 2 seconds between sunrise and sunset, according to timeanddate.com.

Thursday will have five hours and 32 minutes less daylight than the solstice on June 21.

Friday will see one second more of daylight, Saturday 7 seconds more. By New Year’s Eve, we’ll see 31 seconds more daytime.

Some weather nerds get all caught up in such meteorological minutiae, but for millennia the species has celebrated the solstice as an inexorable mark of nature’s cycle.

Cultures across the globe have found symbolism of rebirth in the day and celebrated with festivals and gatherings.
